Title:Accelerating Decision Advantage through Automated Imagery Analysis
Abstract
Decision advantage refers to the ability to process, analyse, and act upon information faster and more accurately than adversaries. This talk explores the challenge facing Defence in achieving decision advantage. One issue is the deluge of imagery data that is available to Defence analysts. Advances in machine learning methods provide a potential solution to accelerating this critical bottleneck in the decision making feedback loop. The talk outlines opportunities for industry and academia to engage and support Defence in this area.
Speaker Biography
Dr Sebastien Wong leads a team of scientists and engineers conducting applied research into computer vision within Information Sciences Division in Defence Science Technology Group. Sebastien holds a Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering (with honours) from Curtin University, a Master of Electronic Systems Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science, both from the University of South Australia. Sebastien also holds a Graduate Diploma in Scientific Leadership from the University of Melbourne and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Sebastien has over two decades of experience in translating research algorithms into operational solutions for Defence, Mining, Manufacturing and Agriculture. Sebastien conceived and led the creation of a multi-award winning AgTech product for mapping and monitoring the worlds high-value crops, which was used to map Australia’s vineyards. Sebastien's current team is working on problems that range from finding dark fishing vessels using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, to enhancing situational awareness for drone video operators. Sebastien is passionate about applying his experience in computer vision and machine learning to transform Defence by providing intelligent tools to decision-makers.

Title: SMART-X in the Era of Gen AI
Speaker Biography
Bandar Alshammari is an associate professor and a principal consultant for strategy and research at Technology Control Company in Saudi Arabia. He earned his BS from the School of Information Technology, University of Canberra. He holds a Master degree in Computer and Communications Engineering and PhD in Software Security Engineering from the Queensland University of Technology. Before his current affiliations, he served in several positions including Vice President for academic affairs, acting Vice President for graduate studies and research, and dean of Admission and Registration at the University of Aljouf. He has published several papers in the area of software security and AI security.

Title: Historical Data Digitisation: when people draw on forms.
Speaker Biography
Alex has been a senior technology specialist with illuminance Solutions since 2017 and has worked in the Perth IT industry since the 1990s. Over that time, he's seen many changes and evolutions in technology and its use and adoption across commercial, government, and education organisations. A common thread across his entire career has been Microsoft related products and services, including their cognitive services to the current wave of GenAI related services.
